Our Forests

We pride ourselves on being good forest stewards and good neighbors.

Sustainable Forests

Science-based Management.

At Hampton Lumber, we approach forest management with an unwavering commitment to sustainability. Our practices are rooted in responsible forestry, preserving and nurturing healthy forests for future generations. Through science-based timberland management, we strive to maintain the delicate balance between economic growth and environmental responsibility, ensuring that our forests thrive for years to come.

Sustainable Forestry Initiative

Third-Party Certification

The goal of sustainable forestry is to combine the continuous growing and harvesting of trees with the protection of wildlife, plants, soil and water quality and a wide range of other conservation goals. Our forest practices are certified through the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) in the U.S. and Canada. We practice a forest stewardship ethic that includes high standards to protect water quality, biodiversity, fish and wildlife habitat, and species at risk.

Forest Recreation

Public & Permitted Access

Our forests aren’t just about lumber—they’re about life. Beyond serving as a vital resource for lumber production, our forestlands provide abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation and enjoyment. From hiking to hunting, there’s something for everyone to explore and appreciate.

Habitat Enhancement

Working with Nature.

As timberland managers, we’re always looking for ways to enhance habitat through the course of our operations. This might include placing large woody debris in streams to enhance fish habitat or constructing and maintaining biodens during harvest operations.

Our Pollinator Enhancement Project is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing habitat and forage for native bees on our lands by strategically sowing native wildflower seeds in recently harvested areas. Pollinators play a critical role in our ecosystem, facilitating the pollination of plants and ensuring food production for various species, including humans.

Hampton Family Forests

Our approach to community and forest stewardship

Our approach to forest management showcases our values and our commitment to the communities in which we operate.

Like other forestland owners in the Pacific Northwest, we manage our forests under some of the most advanced and protective forest practice laws in the world. All of our forests are also certified under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). However, the ways in which we manage our lands and support and enhance the environmental, social and economic benefits our forest provide are certainly unique, influenced by the Hampton family and our long history in the region.

In addition to providing jobs and much needed building materials, our forest support public recreational access, habitat enhancement opportunities, and a venue for the occasional artistic event.

In 2024 alone, we planted 5.9 million seedlings on our forestlands. We replant within 1-2 years of harvest and tend young trees carefully to help re-establish the forest as quickly as possible. These young trees go to work right away, capturing carbon dioxide at faster rates than mature or older forests. Through careful stewardship and the creation of durable wood products, we ensure a sustainable cycle of carbon sequestration and storage.

🌲✨ Happy World Wood Day!

Today, we celebrate one of the most versatile and sustainable resources on the planet—wood! From the homes we build to the communities we support, responsibly managed forests ensure that wood remains a renewable material for generations to come.

At Hampton Lumber, we believe in the power of planting, growing, and harvesting responsibly. Every tree we harvest is replaced, keeping forests thriving and wood products available for the future.

Sustainable forestry means cleaner air, healthier ecosystems, and a strong, renewable resource that continues to benefit people and the planet.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate all the ways wood shapes our world! What’s your favorite way wood is used in daily life? Let us know in the comments! 👇

The Hampton Pollinator Project continues…

Now in our 8th year, we've expanded our pollinator program across our Oregon and Washington timberlands. Just last week we added some plots to our lands in Lincoln County, OR!

How do we do it? Once a unit is harvested, the site prepped for planting and slash piles are burned. Native wildflower seeds are then scattered across the burned areas to create food & habitat critical for pollinators. These seeded units will continue to reseed and expand throughout the unit for the next 10 years [until the canopy closes]. With careful planning (and seeding), we create wildflower corridors to help move pollinators across the landscape.

This project would not be as successful if it weren’t for our partnership with @OregonBeeProject and @OregonStateUniversityExtension. Thank you!

Hampton Lumber is proud to announce an innovative addition to its line of sustainable wood products with the launch of "Future Home" Douglas fir seedling bouquets. Each bouquet contains 50 premium Douglas fir seedlings that, when planted and matured over 35-40 years, will provide enough lumber to frame an entire single-family home.

"We're literally growing homes for the next generation," said the Director of Hampton’s Future Home Division, Helene Verdes. "What better gift for new parents than the trees that will one day build their child's first home?"

The company notes that the average 2,000 square foot home requires approximately 16,000 board feet of framing lumber, which can be sustainably harvested from roughly 50 Douglas fir trees. Hampton's forestry experts have calculated the optimal spacing and care instructions included with each bouquet. In the coming years, Hampton plans to expand its product line by offering a variety of bouquet add-ons, such as a Western red cedar cladding and siding basket.

🌲 Why We Love the Woods 🌲

Meet Susan, one of Hampton’s dedicated foresters! For her, loving the woods means keeping Washington forested for generations to come.

"One of the reasons Washington still has so much forest—compared to where I grew up in Michigan, which used to be forested but is now mostly cut—is because we value working forests. It’s not a working forest if it becomes a Costco. Pavement is forever. Clear cuts don’t last—they grow back!"

Sustainable forestry ensures that our forests remain forests.
