Fort St. James, British Columbia

Rich in culture and history

Get to know our community.

Set along the shoreline of Stuart Lake is a community steeped in the history and culture of the Dakelh First Nations people, including the Nak’azdli, Yekooche, Binche, Tl’azt’en, and Takla Lake communities. The area, adorned with ancient Dakelh pictographs along Stuart Lake’s north shore, continues to be a testament to the deep-rooted connection between the land and its people.

At the Stellat’en Salmon Fest 2024 last month, we were excited to witness the grand opening of the Stellat’en First Nation Salmon Pavilion! We're pleased to be able to partner with the Stellat'en to complete the Shun K'et Gardens Community Park, which serves as a ceremonial facility, an event venue and meeting place, a visitor attraction, and a location to engage in language, education and culture programming. The park has been the focus of significant new investments over the past two years, which have resulted in construction of three new structures.
