Our Forests
We pride ourselves on being good forest stewards and good neighbors.

Sustainable Forests
Science-based Management.
At Hampton Lumber, we approach forest management with an unwavering commitment to sustainability. Our practices are rooted in responsible forestry, preserving and nurturing healthy forests for future generations. Through science-based timberland management, we strive to maintain the delicate balance between economic growth and environmental responsibility, ensuring that our forests thrive for years to come.

Sustainable Forestry Initiative
Third-Party Certification
The goal of sustainable forestry is to combine the continuous growing and harvesting of trees with the protection of wildlife, plants, soil and water quality and a wide range of other conservation goals. Our forest practices are certified through the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) in the U.S. and Canada. We practice a forest stewardship ethic that includes high standards to protect water quality, biodiversity, fish and wildlife habitat, and species at risk.
Forest Recreation
Public & Permitted Access
Our forests aren’t just about lumber—they’re about life. Beyond serving as a vital resource for lumber production, our forestlands provide abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation and enjoyment. From hiking to hunting, there’s something for everyone to explore and appreciate.
Habitat Enhancement
Working with Nature.
As timberland managers, we’re always looking for ways to enhance habitat through the course of our operations. This might include placing large woody debris in streams to enhance fish habitat or constructing and maintaining biodens during harvest operations.
Our Pollinator Enhancement Project is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing habitat and forage for native bees on our lands by strategically sowing native wildflower seeds in recently harvested areas. Pollinators play a critical role in our ecosystem, facilitating the pollination of plants and ensuring food production for various species, including humans.
Hampton Family Forests
Our approach to community and forest stewardship
Our approach to forest management showcases our values and our commitment to the communities in which we operate.
Like other forestland owners in the Pacific Northwest, we manage our forests under some of the most advanced and protective forest practice laws in the world. All of our forests are also certified under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). However, the ways in which we manage our lands and support and enhance the environmental, social and economic benefits our forest provide are certainly unique, influenced by the Hampton family and our long history in the region.
In addition to providing jobs and much needed building materials, our forest support public recreational access, habitat enhancement opportunities, and a venue for the occasional artistic event.
🌲✨ Forestry technology in action! ✨🌲
Modern forest management is all about working smarter and safer, not harder. With high-resolution imagery and precise mapping, drones help ensure accurate planning and better reforestation outcomes.
*Meanwhile, our four-legged "intern" is still figuring out his own logistics… let’s just say stick transport isn’t quite as streamlined. 🐶

🌲 Why We Love the Woods 🌲
Meet Susan, one of Hampton’s dedicated foresters! For her, loving the woods means keeping Washington forested for generations to come.
"One of the reasons Washington still has so much forest—compared to where I grew up in Michigan, which used to be forested but is now mostly cut—is because we value working forests. It’s not a working forest if it becomes a Costco. Pavement is forever. Clear cuts don’t last—they grow back!"
Sustainable forestry ensures that our forests remain forests.

In "wet-side" forests west of the Cascades, clearcutting (also known as regeneration harvesting) is a common method of removing timber safely and efficiently. The method also mimics natural disturbances like windstorms and promotes the regeneration of light-demanding native species like Douglas fir. 🌞 🌲
But not all trees are removed from a harvest area. In WA and OR, in addition to stream and steep slope buffers, landowners are required to leave a certain number of trees per acre for habitat. We often group these "leave trees" in riparian buffers near streams and wetlands, to stabilize banks, protect water quality, and provide shade for aquatic habitats. Hampton foresters stay current on regulations to ensure our practices balance operational needs with conservation activities.

Winter in a Working Forest ❄️🌲
While the forest may seem quiet in winter, it’s actually hard at work preparing for spring. Trees slow their growth, conserving energy as temperatures drop. Meanwhile, the forest floor protects seedlings and young trees, creating a frost-covered nursery that will burst into life once warmer days return. 🌱
From frost-covered saplings to towering evergreens, our forests are growing strong—year-round.

Seedlings are where sustainable forestry begins 🌱🌲. At nurseries, careful planning and strategy help ensure healthy forests for future generations.
Seedlings often start their journey in a greenhouse, where conditions are carefully controlled for optimal growth in their early stages. Once strong enough, they move to bareroot fields, where they grow in natural conditions, developing the robust root systems needed to thrive when planted in the forest.
This greenhouse-to-bareroot approach ensures the seedlings are strong, adaptable, and ready for reforestation—supporting clean air, healthy habitats, and renewable resources. It’s a small start for a big impact! 🌎

Working forests support a wide variety of wildlife. 🌲🐾 That’s why our logging crews create bio-dens at harvest time—thoughtfully arranged slash piles that provide shelter and protection for wildlife.
Bio-dens offer a temporary haven for critters like birds, small mammals, and even reptiles. These critter condos are just one of the ways we share the forest and act as good neighbors to the wildlife that visit our timberlands!
