Career Paths
Entry Level Manufacturing
Entry Level positions at our sawmills are also known as Utility jobs because these employees quickly become a jack or jill of many trades. No need for a degree or any specialized experience; solid work ethic, a good attitude, and a willingness to learn are the most important qualifications. Utility personnel have the opportunity to fill-in and assist with a variety of jobs throughout the mill. This is a springboard position for those looking to advance in the industry. Most of our equipment operators, managers, and apprentices started out at entry level.
Millwright
A millwright is a skilled tradesperson who installs, maintains, repairs, and dismantles machinery and equipment in industrial settings. Their work is critical to ensuring that our sawmills run safely and efficiently. Hampton offers an in-house apprenticeship program for current employees interested in becoming a Journey-level millwright. Once selected for an apprenticeship position, we cover all the costs associated with your education, including tuition and books, and we offer flexible schedules to allow for class time instruction.
Equipment Operators
We use a lot of heavy equipment on the plant site, including giant log loaders called LeTourneaus. These massive vehicles remove logs from arriving trucks, sort stacks, and deliver logs to the mill infeed. From fork lifts to LeTourneaus, we have a variety of operator positions at our mills to ensure logs and lumber are moved to and from the plant site safely and efficiently.
Lumber Sales
With major sales offices in Portland, Oregon and Richmond, British Columbia, our sales team is always ready to meet customers’ needs. Each year we market nearly 3.5 billion board feet of lumber and more than 300 million square feet of OSB and plywood products to destinations near and far. Our export division, TRAPA Forest Products, markets wood products all over the world. Our wholesale division supports a wide variety of rewarding careers in sales, transportation, international trade.
Computer Controls and Programming
Sawmills have changed a lot over the years. Cutting-edge technologies have been added to manufacturing facilities to optimize processes (to get more value out of each log) and improve worker comfort and safety. That means we need skilled workers to manage and troubleshoot a variety of computer applications and equipment. If you like technology but don’t want to be stuck at a desk all day—a job in sawmill computer controls might be right for you.
Foresters
Our foresters are responsible for managing and overseeing the cultivation, maintenance, and harvest operations on our timberlands. Foresters typically have a college degree in forestry and specialize in silviculture or forest engineering. They manage reforestation efforts, monitor and protect trees as they grow, design harvest operations, protect water quality and important habitats, and work closely with local logging and hauling contractors to get logs to the mill safely.
